OPENING NIGHT NEW ORLEANS GALA!!!

ALLEN TOUSSAINT

Jack Singer Concert Hall - 8PM Show

Buy Tickets Here

71-year-old composer, producer, pianist and singer Allen Toussaint can, without hesitation, be called a living legend.  His work as composer, producer, arranger and performer helped shape the sound of R&B, soul and funk in the 60s and 70s, and as we know it today.  Toussaint has collaborated memorably with artists ranging from Lee Dorsey and Ernie K. Doe to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle, from the Meters and Dr. John to Paul McCartney and recently, on a soon to be released Nonesuch disc with Elvis Costello and in performance at the Grammys with Lil Wayne. He brings his easy-going charm and humour to the Calgary Jazz Festival 30th Anniversary opening night gala, along with seductive, percolating rhythms indigenous to New Orleans, the city he has always called home.

MEDESKI MARTIN AND WOOD

Jack Singer Concert Hall - 8PM Show

Buy Tickets Here

The Brooklyn trio of keyboard/organ/piano player John Medeski, drummer/percussionist Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood began experimenting with contemporary hip-hop beats that could swing as hard as jazz rhythms, yet remained essentially simple and propulsive. It gave the musicians ample room to create hypnotic textures and sounds brimming with both improvisation and harmony, and it was the beginning of their world wide following. After their first albums, starting in 1991 with Notes From the Underground, they were signed by Blue Note for three discs, pushing their sonic boundaries, incorporating percussionists, horn sections, and turntables into their already potent sound, and creating dynamic live performances that were concerts to some, and dance parties to others.

MMW are no longer signed to anyone else's record label; they have come full circle by establishing Indirecto Records, and making the music they want. The trio's first Indirecto release, Out Louder, was a four-way collaboration with guitarist John Scofield, which true-to-form is heavy on group improvisation, irresistible grooves, rich harmonies, and strong melodies.  They released the second album of their Radiolarians trilogy on April 14th 2009.

JAMES COTTON - SUPERHARP!
DOUBLE BILL WITH MOSE ALLISON

Jack Singer Concert Hall - 8PM Show

Buy Tickets Here

A true legend of the blues, James Cotton is a living link to its origins. Growing up working in the cotton fields, he picked up the harmonica after listening to King Biscuit Time, a 15-minute radio show starring Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller). At the age of nine, Cotton met his idol, and became Sonny Boys ‘opening act’, playing outside the juke joints of Mississippi and Arkansas because he was too young to go in. At the ripe old age of 15, he cut four songs at the infamous Sun Records. Muddy Waters heard the recordings, and took him on the road with him.

So began a long career, working with the likes of the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Steve Miller, and B.B. King. Cotton became known as the ultimate showman. By the time he got to the center of the stage and blew his first note, the audience was on its feet, dancing, screaming, sweating right along with him.

MOSE ALLISON
with Mike Lent and Sandro Dominelli

Often called "the William Faulkner of Jazz", his music was often overshadowed by the many blues and rock artists who he influenced and made his songs famous,  including The Rolling Stones, John Mayall, and J. J. Cale. The Who made Moses’ "Young Man Blues" a staple of their live performances. “Look Here” was covered by The Clash on their album Sandinista! Van Morrison released an album of his songs entitled Tell Me Something: The Songs of Mose Allison, and Elvis Costello recorded “Everybody's Cryin' Mercy” on his album Kojak Variety and “Your Mind Is On Vacation” on King of America.

Jack Singer Concert Hall - 8PM Show

World-renowned saxophonist and three-time Grammy winner Branford Marsalis was raised in one of the New Orleans most distinguished musical families. Under the patriarch/pianist/educator Ellis, and amongst his siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason, Branford developed a broad musical interest and experience. He gained initial acclaim with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and his brother Wynton’s quintet in the early 1980s. He spent two years touring and recording with Sting, and two more leading the band on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show.  He has collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby, acted in films including Throw Mama from the Train and School Daze, provided music for Mo’ Better Blues, and appeared as a guest soloist doing the classics with numerous chamber and symphony orchestras.  He has also performed and recorded with a who’s-who of jazz giants including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins. And he has developed his own unique musical approach with his band Buckshot LeFonque, and with his Quartet, which has become one of the leading small ensembles of the past two decades.

“The band’s just getting better,” confirms Branford.  “It comes from the growth of each individual, which you can hear. I know that my tone is more focused on both tenor and soprano saxophones, and my technique is vastly improved. And you can hear the same kind of development in [pianist] Joey [Calderazzo], [bassist Eric] Revis and [drummer Jeff] `Tain’ [Watts].”

Branford is also to be recognized for his social conscience. Marsalis quickly immersed himself in relief efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.  He is the honorary chair of the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity effort to rebuild the city, and together with his friend Harry Connick, Jr. conceived the Habitat Musicians' Village currently under construction in the city's historic Ninth Ward. (C-Jazz is working with Habitat for Humanity to raise funds for both the Calgary and New Orleans chapter).

She has recorded over 20 albums, is a published author, appears regularly in movies and soundtracks and has her own television program. Her influence is felt around the world, whether working with her husband Tutty Moreno, or New York musicians Joe Lovano, Mulgrew Miller, or Renee Rosnes, doing a soundtrack for a Japanese anime movie, or being sampled by the Black-Eyed Peas. And now, she is about to make her Calgary debut.

PIANORQUESTRA

This 'single piano orchestra' uses techniques based on John Cage's experiments to broaden the possibilities of sounds produced by a piano. An avant-garde musical experiment - one piano played by five musicians, using their ten hands - transforms the instrument into its own orchestra. Claudio Dauelsberg, the Brazilian creator and director, leads four musicians through popular Brazilian music, including contemporary composers such as Villa-Lobos, Tom Jobim and Milton Nascimento and into ethnic rhythms such as samba, coco, maracatu and ciranda. It has to be seen and heard to be believed.
